Following the death of their mother, a Thai-American brother and sister navigate living in New York City and beyond. Jamie plans an impromptu trip for her and her brother to get out of the city. Along the way, and upon their return to New York, the two siblings face a series of unexpected revelations. Shot on 16mm, Softshell gives the mumblecore aesthetic a unique Asian American worldview.

PRESS

“Invigorating. Nothing short of extraordinary.” -Alex Lei, In Review Online
“Myung’s film knows what it’s after. More Bujalski than Safdie (which is to say more melancholic than anxious), Softshell delivers the primary formal components of mumblecore.” - Rebecca Turner, Screen Slate
“Shot on 16mm, the debut feature builds on Myung’s influences but is extremely of the moment.” - Vadim Rizov, Filmmaker Magazine
“A vibrant work that harkens back to the spirit of truly independentAmerican cinema of the 80s and 90s, while having so much to say about life today.” - Eric Allen Hatch, Director of Programming New/Next Film Festival
