Ethan (Joe Swanberg) is a director who aims to make meaningful art films, but is struggling with a creative slump and disengagement with his work. His girlfriend Claire (Kate Lyn Sheil), is an actress whose career is beginning to take off. She has accepted the lead part in a werewolf movie being directed by talented young horror filmmaker Ben (Ti West).  Ethan's depression leads to jealousy over both Claire’s success and her increasingly close relationship with Ben. Ethan decides to retaliate against Claire by casting her best friend Charlie (Amy Seimetz) in a romantic role opposite himself in his new film. As pettiness and jealousy spiral out of control within their relationship, Claire begins to slip into a surreal fantasy world that more closely mirrors her role in the werewolf film than that of her real life.  Largely improvised Silver Bullets draws inspiration from Chekhov ‘s The Seagull and Roman Polanski’s Bitter Moon, while using David Foster Wallace as a reference point to explores fame, depression and suicide.

Starring: Kate Lyn Sheil, Ti West, Amy Seimetz, Joe Swanberg, Jane Adams and Larry Fessenden

Festivals: Berlin, SXSW and Maryland

ART HISTORY

Director: Joe Swanberg |
Length: 74 minutes

Sam (Joe Swanberg) has feelings for Juliette (Josephine Decker), the lead actress in a sexually explicit drama centered on a couple's one night stand. He must maintain a professional relationship while directing her. All is going well until Juliette and her co-star Eric (Kent Osborne) develop feelings for each other that they explore off-camera. Sam is happy that his actors have such great chemistry, but simultaneously feels jealous. Juliette senses Sam's shifting moods and does her best to show him affection, but his own inner struggles threaten to derail the production.

Swanberg describes Art History as being both the most beautiful and the most disgusting-looking movie he has ever made. Set entirely in one location over the course of a few days, ART HISTORY uses long static takes and minimal lighting to create a mood of claustrophobia and mystery. Despite the small space they're living and working in, the characters often seem unaware of one another through their individual experiences.

Starring:
Josephine Decker, Joe Swanberg, Kent Osborne, Adam Wingard and Kris Swanberg

Festivals:
Berlin, Uruguay and Maryland

- Richard Brody, The New Yorker

“Joe Swanberg is taking big steps.”
- Mark Olsen, LA Times

"None of these films are fun; they're my guts being spread out on screen."
- Joe Swanberg
